Doulas, Conferences, Manchester, Homelessness, Poetry and Rainbows.

Given the recent events in Manchester and the atrocities committed there - I thought this would be a good time to share the light and love I found in the Train Station on my way home from the uplifting Doula UK Conference.

My friend Jen and I were snacking and waiting for it to be time for a train when this scruffy guy passed us by. "Hi he said" - "I am homeless, I don't like to beg, but I love writing poetry, I can read you one of my poems", he seemed like a lovely gentle soul, he rattled off a list of poems he could read, but there was only one thing on my mind - Rainbows. Jen has a similar mindset.

For me, rainbows are the proof that there is always colour and light in the darkness - even when we can't see them.

"Rainbows" we said in unison, he sort of frowned and then a smile shot across his face, he stood there, slightly away from us, scribbling away and then turned back to face us, reading in a beautiful, resonant voice he began.

Pot of gold

Stairs to the spirit

Domain only those

With the gift of light, love

Can behold

Rainbows in the sun

Spectrum of colour

That never run

You'll catch them

Unless you pass the test

Up you go

The wonders of the wonderful

Thank you and God Bless, Ben.

He has stuck in my mind Ben, wondering what took a man with such poetry in his soul to homelessness, he touched me, his words live in the drawer next to my bed and also in my heart. Jen and I hope our paths meet again, so we can make a more generous contribution and also so we can tell him how much his words touched our soul and have stayed with us.

Maybe one day he will read this and then he will know.
