Global Heart Healing and Bodywork: Closing the Bones and Rebozo Massage for Pregnancy, Birth and Beyond
Accredited Training for Holistic or Massage Therapists, Doulas, Midwives and Birthworkers
Presented by Bliss Russell (
BSc(Hons) IIHHT FFHT IPTI IPHM
Techniques to support and nurture mothers throughout pregnancy with gentle rocking in a traditional shawl or other practical cloth, encourage good positioning and facilitate contractions during birth, and boost recovery post-birth with massage to encourage proper positioning of abdominal organs, pelvic alignment and to relax the lower back. Rebozo massage techniques and closing the bones are a traditional supportive ceremony practised by women in South America, but the treatment is becoming a well-recognised supportive adjunct to pregnancy and birth care worldwide in conventional midwifery settings, as well as doula care and holistic maternity support for mums and supporters. This is a treatment which can be learned and used by anyone to support the health and wellbeing of our local communities.
Bliss has two decades in practice as a therapist and bodyworker, and has been running educational workshops since the early noughties. She has experience working in clinical and private settings, teaching in FE colleges and as an in house training provider for spa and salon businesses. She has specialised in working with new and expectant parents as an area of special interest since 2006 when she became pregnant with her own daughter, and has had extensive training in holistic methods of maternity care, learning from midwives, traditional healers, doulas and experienced therapists, massage and bodywork practitioners around the world. She has devoted part of her current Master of Research in Health and Wellbeing at the University of Bristol to a literature review of rebozo techniques and designed a research proposal for a study into the use of this technique in UK birth centres. Bliss has designed this course to incorporate the best of what she has learned and fill the gaps in other similar courses.
This course is accredited by IPHM, and offers up to 7 hours CPD credit upon completion.
This intensive one day training course will cover theoretical points including the history and cultural context of rebozo use, current research into the technique, anatomy, pathology and physiological effects of this and closing the bones on the body. We will also discuss the current professional practice guidelines, insurance and regulations relating to this practice and pregnancy care in general.
The practical element of the day will cover sifting the hips, belly rocking and binding, traditional sacral abdominal massage and closing the bones, appropriate massage oil blends for the practice, shaking the apples, sifting, hip squeeze and belly lifts. We will also cover the possibility of extending the practice into a full body treatment, working with others to rock and bind, and the use of tools, drum and song to enhance the practice.
This course is being offered for the special introductory price of £60 for all participants, in collaboration with Samantha Gadsden, Doula, at a venue to be confirmed with numbers, in Maesycwmmer. Please contact Sam with any enquires relating to the venue or directions to the event, and to register your interest in the course.
